This is a lovely and very original Series 2 black dial Lemania chronograph dating from the mid 1950's which would have been used by the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm. The rear case has the Admiralty reference number 0552/920-3305 and the unique issue identification number 55127. Unusually for this model the watch has spring bars for strap retention instead of the more usually seen fixed bars. Recent research is revealing that watches with this feature were probably released by the MOD (Ministry of Defence) in this mode as several examples have been seen. This feature does of course mean that the watch benefits from the capability of being able to be worn with any type of strap required. The watch functions very well and is in excellent condition. The dial is superb with the lume having aged to a lovely brown colour. All of this type of watch were re-dialled by the MOD in the 1960's when the radium lumed dials were abandoned for tritium lumed dials (hence the circled T on the dial). Some examples suffer from a rather poor quality of MOD dial printing but this one has crisp definition to all the numerals and indices and is one of the best dials I have seen. The case is in excellent condition with no damage or gouges. There is evidence of some slightly over enthusiastic case re-polishing during it's life but overall the watch is in very original condition. The movement is the gilded 17 Jewel Lemania 15 CHT movement (non shock protected) and has serial number 455258. The movement is in fine condition but has not been serviced during my ownership, it is however very clean and keeping good time. The watch measures 37mm in diameter and 45mm across the lugs, depth is 12mm. (only 1 example available from stock).
